A resource journal for common mistakes made within the HARPG community because I'm a stickler for facts :B

:bulletblack: THIS HORSE IS NOT A DAPPLE GREY.
His name is Austin, he's a Silver Black Tobiano Gyspy Vanner (
his geno is EE aa Zz Tt). His coat greys out in the winter and in the summer he has a rich chocolate coat. If you make a character based on him please keep this in mind.

:bulletblack: HANDS HIGH
A "hand" is measured in lots of 4 inches. So it's 15hh, 15.1hh, 15.2hh, 15.3hh, 16hh etc

:bulletblack: nPrl CrCr or PrlPrl nCr or PrlPrl CrCr CANNOT EXIST.
Pearl and Cream occupy the same locus, so a horse that has both genes present can only ever be nPrl nCr.

:bulletblack: RnRn ToTo CANNOT EXIST.
Pretty much the same reason as above. This is also true of Sabino and Dominant White (though hopefully there aren't any WW horses out there because they probably should be... not born?)
Edit: Poor wording on my part ^^;
Tobiano, Roan, Sabino, and Dom. White all occupy the same locus (or near enough that it messes with the genes). Adding to that, if a horse has two of any of these genes they can only ever pass one copy to their offspring. So a Tobiano Roan horse (Tt Rnrn) would only be able to produce Tobiano offspring OR Roan offspring, not both.
If it makes it easier, write the geno out as ToRn or ToSb1 as it is common practice amongst breeders.

:bulletblack: TOVERO
is a dumb term but it typically covers all multi pinto gene combos, even the ones without Tobiano or Overo. I highly encourage using new names for combos like Splabiano, or Splovero, or Sabiano (that last one might be a breed, I'll have to double check).

:bulletblack: REAL BREEDS, REAL COLOURS
90% of real world breeds don't come in every colour currently known. It's important to do research before creating a horse to make sure the colour you've chosen is actually acceptable in the pureblood stock.
For example, I once created an Amber Champagne ClydiexTB. Neither Thoroughbreds or Clydesdales have the Champagne gene in their respective breeds.
(that said, this ain't real life so don't beat yourself up about it unless you genuinely want to be as realistic as possible)
:new: Champagne is not found in Gyspy Vanners despite what some breeders may tell you. Be sure to check a breeds registry and history to get accurate information about what colours are available in a breed.

:bulletblack: FEATHERS DON'T MAKE THE DRAFT
Sticking feathers on a normal horse doesn't make it a draft horse. Draft horses have a very obvious build to them that normal horses don't match. Also, not all drafts have feathers. Also also, Friesians are Light Drafts, give them a few more pounds. Check out a bunch of stock photos for good body type references.
:new: There is a correlation between the amount of feathers a horse has and the thickness of it's cannon bone. Environment and breeding also plays a part.

:new::bulletblack: WAR CUTS
Rarely used in war. Manes that naturally roach should be coarse and stiff, like the Norwegian Fjord. Breeds like the Andalusian that are bred for silky soft hair do not naturally roach unless they are cut very short. It's common among Spanish breeders to shave the manes and tails of their broodmares, giving them a teeny tiny roached mane.

:new::bulletblack: COLOUR BREEDING
I'm not really a fan, but if you work well trying to get the right build of horse AND the cool colour there's nothing wrong with it (unless you're breeding overos together then I have a fly swatter with your name on it).
The thing is with colour breeding, if you wanna do it right you need HOMOZYGOUS horses. You want certainty when breeding because there's a fuckton of things that can go wrong.
For example, if you want a Classic Champagne foal you need a homozygous Black horse and a homozygous Champagne horse and be 100% positive that neither have Agouti genes hiding away in there. Anything else and you've gotta wait another year or two before you can retry.
So yeah... if you want pretty coloured horses goes with the homozygous horses.

:new::bulletblack: CHAMPAGNE ON CREAM
Both these genes are considered Dilutes, putting them together and you've got one pale motherfucker. American Cream Drafts frequently present both genes so look to them for colour help~ (also because they're a cool breed and kinda rare did you know I like drafts?)

:new::bulletblack: COLOUR CALCULATOR AND GENETICS GAME
Colour Calculator with results showing the percentage chance of what a foal will be.
Genetics Game, takes KIT genes and LWO into consideration! (bit slow to load, if you have dial up it might take a while).

If you ever have any questions about genetics or just things in general don't be afraid to ask! Lotta artists here are keen on just sharing what they know~

This is really helpful, thank you. I am new to this arena.
